OneBeat Opens Hearts, Build Bridges, And Creates A Better World Through Collaborative Music-Making

1beat.org

OneBeat is a cultural exchange initiative of the US Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and produced by Found Sound Nation, which is a sector of the Bang on a Can organization. Bang on a Can focuses on commissioning, promoting and performing music by living composers and WUOT listeners may be familiar with them through their participation in the Big Ears Festival.

OneBeat brings together 25 musicians from 17 countries and will be in-residency in Knoxville from October 7th through October 9th. Presented in partnership with the Big Ears Festival, the initiative will host several free events including:

Panel Discussion and Performance

  • October 7th at 7pm at Fourth Presbyterian Church, Knoxville: a panel discussion on building global arts communities in collaboration with the multigenerational theatre ensemble Carpetbag Theatre. The discussion will also include performances by OneBeat musicians

OneBeat Street Studio

  • October 8th from 12pm-2pm in historic Market Square, Knoxville: an interactive recording studio hosted by OneBeat artists

Finale Performance at the Bijou Theatre

  • October 9th at 7:30pm at the Bijou Theatre in Knoxville: in a culminating concert at the end of a 10-day tour, OneBeat artists will share their music in a blowout performance presented at the Bijou Theatre (note: while this performance is free, audience members will need to obtain a ticket, due to limited seating at The Bijou Theatre)

While in Knoxville, OneBeat will also host workshops with the Joy of Music School, UT School of Music Pellissippi State, and the Change Center.
The mission of OneBeat is to use music as a strategy to generate peace and cooperation. It is based on a common belief: that music can open hearts, bridge differences and collaboratively create a better world.

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
